You’ve got to be kidding me, Harvey!

So our MySKY HDi was installed yesterday.  As the included HDMI cable is only 1m long I had to go on a hunt for a 10m HMDI to DVI cable so I can connect it to the projector.  The one I wanted was an end of line item and was going for $39.95 at Dick Smith Electronics.  One of 5 stores that had one in stock was in Henderson so I rang them to get them to hold it.  Unfortunately, they knew it was listed as being in stock but no one had been able to find it in store during a recent stock take so they suggested I call Harvey Norman.

So I call the Henderson branch of the retail chain and finally get through to an Indian gentleman who seems to understand what I’m looking for.  After 5 minutes of searching I come off hold to his voice saying they do have the cable I want in stock.  My next question is how much?  He goes away for another minute or so and comes back to say Five, Eight, Nine in his thick Indian accent.  Now, was that $5.89?  $58.90 or something else?  I couldn’t quite make it out so I asked again.

He replied “$589.  This is our retail price but if you come down to the store then I can give you a 50% discount”.  I was somewhat in shock.  $589?!!  It’s a top-of-the-line cable he told me.  It would have to be, I replied.  He then tried to tell me he could knock it down to $200.

I told him he was dreaming and that I could pick one up off ebay for $40.  He then sounded shocked and basically told me I was lying as that was far too cheap.  He then got served with a dial tone.

Some other happy Australian retailer has now shipped me the cable I wanted at a far more reasonable price.  Here’s hoping it arrives in time for me to watch the Australian Rugby Team demolish the All Blacks on Saturday night in HD glory!
